仁木弾正は、江戸時代に初演された歌舞伎の代表的な演目『伽羅先代萩（めいぼくせんだいはぎ）』に登場する架空の悪役です。彼は、妖術使いのような設定で描かれ、特に分身の術や隠形（おんぎょう）の術といった、あたかも忍者のような特殊な能力を使うことで観客を魅了しました。
しかし、仁木弾正が実際に忍びの術を会得していたわけではありません。これらの術は、歌舞伎特有の演出技法であり、役者が舞台上で見得（みえ）を切る際や、素早く姿を消す際に、観客に忍者のような超人的な能力があるかのように見せるためのものです。例えば、早替わりや宙乗りといった仕掛けが用いられ、視覚的な驚きを提供しました。
仁木弾正の存在は、当時の庶民が抱いていた忍者への想像力や、歌舞伎という芸能が持つエンターテイメント性を象徴しています。史実の忍者とは異なるものの、彼のキャラクターは歌舞伎の世界において、忍者のイメージを広める一因となったと言えるでしょう。彼は、歌舞伎の舞台芸術の中で、忍者の持つ神秘性や異能のイメージを具現化した存在として、今もなお多くの人々に記憶されています。
Niki Danjo is a fictional villain who appears in "Meiboku Sendai Hagi", a representative Kabuki play first performed during the Edo period. He is portrayed as a sorcerer, captivating audiences by using special abilities like doppelgänger (bunshin no jutsu) and invisibility (ongyo no jutsu), as if he were a ninja.
However, Niki Danjo did not actually master ninja arts. These techniques are specific Kabuki performance methods, used to make it appear as though the actor possesses superhuman abilities, like a ninja, when striking dramatic poses (mie) or quickly disappearing from the stage. For example, quick changes (hayagawari) and aerial stunts (chugairi) were employed to provide visual surprise.
Niki Danjo's existence symbolizes the popular imagination of ninjas held by common people at the time, and the entertainment value of Kabuki as a performing art. Although different from historical ninjas, his character played a role in popularizing the image of ninjas within the world of Kabuki. He is still remembered by many as a character who embodied the mystique and extraordinary abilities of ninjas within Kabuki's stage artistry.
