Danjo Niki is a fictional villain who appears in the representative Kabuki play "Meiboku Sendaihagi," which premiered in the Edo period. He is portrayed as a sorcerer, and he captivated audiences with his ninja-like special abilities, especially the art of bunshin (creating a double body ) and ongyo (hiding in a hidden form) .

However, Niki Danjo did not actually master the art of ninja. These techniques are specific to Kabuki and are used to give the audience the impression that the actors have superhuman abilities, such as ninja, when they make a mie (pose) on stage or when they quickly disappear. For example, quick costume changes and mid-air jumping were used to provide visual surprises.

Niki Danjo's existence symbolizes the imagination of ordinary people at the time about ninjas and the entertainment value of the performing art of Kabuki. Although he is different from real ninjas, it can be said that his character played a part in spreading the image of ninjas in the world of Kabuki. He is still remembered by many people today as an embodiment of the mysticism and supernatural powers of ninjas in the performing arts of Kabuki.
