"Genji Goshu Yojo" is a series of ukiyo-e prints painted by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) in the late Edo period. It is based on the illustrations in Ryutei Tanehiko's long reading book "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji," which is based on "The Tale of Genji."
This work is a play on the 54 chapters of "The Tale of Genji," and the extravagant lifestyles and customs of the glamorous characters are linked to the publishing culture and advertising of the Edo period, making it popular among the masses. Even after "Nishida Genji" went out of print due to publishing restrictions imposed by the Tenpo Reforms, its influence extended to the world of ukiyo-e, and many works were produced as "Genji-e."
It has been pointed out that it may have been perceived as a visualization of an ideal life plan for women such as palace ladies-in-waiting.
